ANTI-VAPING WORKSHOPS:
THE PRESENTATION

The aim of this presentation is to present students with the facts about the physical effects of vaping, looking at the mechanics of electronic cigarettes (also known as e-cigarettes or vape pens) and what goes into these vape pen juices, and how vaping can affect their lives beyond just their physical health.

The presentation will provide students with data based in science and research, rather than depending on not-entirely-accurate information youth may have seen online or heard from their friends. For example, many youth may have heard that e-cigarettes are a totally harmless alternative to smoking cigarettes since they don’t contain tobacco. However, vape pen juices actually contain aluminum, tin, and nickel - doesn’t seem quite as harmless anymore, does it?

The presentation also explores why some individuals decide to begin vaping by looking at the science behind what drives us to decide to try something new. This can help youth understand the motivation behind why they or their friends might choose to begin vaping, even though it’s harmful.

The presentation will also provide information about how to quit vaping, or how youth can support their friends in quitting vaping.

There is a section to remind youth of the laws surrounding vaping, as well as your school’s specific policies and consequences regarding vaping on school property.

This presentation can be personalized for your school by including information about your school’s vaping policy, as well as getting students involved in video production and interviews. Some of the videos include skits showing students vaping and passing around a mock e-cigarette in the bathroom, and standing up to peer pressure to say no to vaping
Videos also include students being interviewed about the vaping problem at their school, as well as an interview with the principal discussing the issue, and how many students they have suspended due to vaping. This would also be an opportunity for the principal to review the rules about vaping, and the consequences for any students caught vaping on school property.

The presentation ends with activities for students to participate in.
